The Trusted Internet Resource for Substance Abuse, Alcohol and Drug Addiction Information

Treatment for Substance use can be successful when individuals and their families fully participate in the recovery process. This includes understanding the biological, psychological, social and spiritual consequences of chemical use, how individuals and families are effected, and what the causes of relapse are. Also, by learning the difference between helping and enabling, family members can begin to support a drug-free lifestyle while addressing their own issues related to this illness. Hope, forgiveness, health boundaries, and serenity are all possible as families grow together toward a healthy lifestyle in recovery.

New Directions has been providing drug treatment and substance abuse information for individuals and their families since 1999. We share a common view of how to best treat chemical abuse. Our philosophy is based on a set of principles that serve as a fundamental foundation for our approach to treatment.

Beliefs: Any chemical use is potentially harmful:
A person under the influence of mood altering substances has an impaired ability to make healthy decisions.

Substance abuse is an emotional illness:
After a relationship with drugs or alcohol has been developed, the ability to identify, express, and cope with emotions is damaged. Drug rehab programs can help.

Addiction is a biochemical disease:
Addiction is a primary, chronic, progressive disease that has its roots in genetics and brain chemistry.

Substance abuse occurs in all kinds of families:
Substance abuse crosses the lines of gender, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and spiritual and religious beliefs.

Everyone in the family is effected by chemical abuse:
Family members and others close to a person who is abusing chemicals are effected by the use and the consequences of that use.

Recovery requires support:
Essential elements of recovery are lifestyle change and support.
